2010 --- Forbes' magazine
FORBES' 2010 :
Infosys, TCS, ITC and Mahindra and Mahindra are among the 16 Indian companies named in Forbes' magazine's 2010 compilation of the Asia-Pacific's 50 biggest listed companies.
India and China together account for 32 of the 50 companies in Forbes' sixth annual 'Asia's Fabulous 50 listed companies'.
The other Indian companies making it to the list are Adani Enterprises, Axis Bank, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, HCL Technologies, HDFC Bank, Hindalco Industries, Jindal Steel and Power, JSW Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Larsen and Toubro and Sterlite Industries.
When the list was first compiled in 2005, only five Chinese and three Indian outfits made the cut.
"Economies around Asia bounced back last year and so did many of our Fabulous 50 companies. Earnings, revenues and stock prices soared almost across the board after a rocky time the previous year," Forbes said.
Among the Indian firms, Forbes specifically talks about Axis Bank and ITC.
"The two are leaders in their industry -- Axis Bank, India's third-largest non-state-owned bank, and ITC, led by Y C Deveshwar, who is determined to give ITC a life beyond tobacco.
"Axis, with USD 41 billion in assets and nearly 22,000 employees, is one of the fastest-growing companies in the country," Forbes said.
Its revenues rose 29 per cent to hit USD 3.4 billion dollars in the year ended March 31, while net profit jumped 57 per cent to USD 553 million.
"It's this performance that puts Axis on the Fab 50 for the second straight year. The bank is looking to add 200 branches this year to the 1,055 it already has," it noted.
Crediting Axis Bank Chief Executive Shikha Sharma for the bank's performance, Forbes said, "In the 15 months since she took charge, Sharma has teased out the bank's strengths - infrastructure finance, retail banking, processing payments and lending to small and medium-size enterprises."
"She's also put more emphasis on risk management," it said, quoting Sharma as saying, "It's not about being the biggest. We want to grow our book sensibly. We want to do something that we are confident of executing well."
In its profile of ITC and Chairman Y C Deveshwar, Forbes says, "In Deveshwar's era, ITC has clearly achieved more than a measure of progress. Today about half of its net revenues of USD 4.3 billion comes from cigarettes and the other half from hotels, paperboard, infotech, agribusiness and now increasingly, foods and personal care.
"By the time Deveshwar is to step down in April, 2012, he will have spent more than 15 years as chairman of ITC. But that's not a sobriquet that Deveshwar really cares about.
"For the past decade, he's been transforming ITC from a cigarette-maker to a fast-moving consumer goods company," Forbes added.
The company's five-year plan envisions a nearly four-fold growth in revenues, Forbes said.
"In the consumer business, you need scale to build a franchise. It is a chicken-and-egg problem. We will infuse life into these businesses so that they can stand on their own legs," Forbes quotes Deveshwar as saying on his future plans for the company.
To compile the list, Forbes started with 936 companies that had at least USD 3 billion dollars in revenue or market capitalisation.
It took into account these companies' revenue, operating earnings and return on capital over the past five years in order to rank them.
It also considered the most recent results, share-price movements and outlook.
These 50 companies boast of "solid financial track records, coupled with great management and entrepreneurial skill," it said.
Other companies featured on the list are Australian materials giant Rio Tinto, Chinese technology firm Lenovo, Japanese technology company Nintendo, South Korea's Samsung Engineering and Taiwan's tech giants Acer and HTC.
Only two companies boast of featuring in every edition of the list, Hong Kong's Li & Fung and India's Infosys Technologies, while five companies saw their streaks end this year, including Australia's BHP Billiton and India's Wipro.
China has 16 companies on the list, followed by Hong Kong and Taiwan (4 each), South Korea (3), Australia and Japan (2 each) and Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand (1 each).
In terms of industry, technology companies dominated the list this year, with 10 representatives.
The materials industry had the second largest representation through eight companies.
For the first time on the Fab 50 list, oil & gas and telecommunications industries both went unrepresented

Temple of gloom
Lord Vekateswara's benevolence draws millions of devotees to the Tirumala temple, but maladministration and misdemeanour are shaking the faith in the governance of the richest Hindu religious entity. Rocked by controversies and scandals, the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams (TTD) is being accused by employees and trustees of being in disrepute. The charges are so serious that on the expiry of the tenure of the existing board of trustees last week, Chief Minister Konjeti Rosaiah appointed a Specified Authority (SA) of three IAS officers to oversee temple affairs. "Our foremost priority is to serve the devotees in an effective manner and ensure a transparent administration," says J. Satyanarayana, chairman of the SA that is mandated to clean up the mess and put governance back in order without eroding faith.
That may be a hard task. Inquiries by India Today revealed that gross management of valued assets including jewellery, poor auditing, lack of transparency, sales of advance tickets and belligerence of employees has plagued the functioning of the TTD. With an annual budget of Rs 1,335 crore, 8,000 regular employees and another 6,000 outsourced for various jobs, the TTD is an empire in itself. It is the wealthiest religious entity in the world with 14 tonnes of gold and jewellery worth Rs 500 crore.
Internal reports by B.V. Ramana Kumar, former chief vigilance and security officer of the TTD, presented on July 28, 2008 and February 23, 2009, have bared the misappropriation of 300 gold medallions in 2007. The report suggested measures to ensure safety of the jewellery and punitive action in the conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, forgery, corruption and cyber crime involved in the manipulation of online and advance booking of tickets by temple officials.
Unholy Mess
1. The Tirumala temple has 14 tonnes of gold reserves and jewellery worth Rs 500 crore donated by devotees. These have not been recorded and valued properly and security for them is not full proof. Three years ago, 300 gold medallions were misappropriated, exposing security and safety loops.
2. Online tickets for rituals and darshan are booked in advance and sold for a premium by TTD officials in connivance with touts, resulting in huge losses to the temple. Tickets for some rituals have already been booked till 2100, allegedly through touts.
3. Recording of finances and accounting practices are so shoddy that it is impossible to retrieve the total assets of the TTD from one single source. This makes it easier to siphon off funds from the TTD.
4. High positions on the TTD board are held by political appointees, resulting in corruption and mismanagement of funds.
Kumar made specific suggestions for greater accountability and transparency and these include:
1)Keeping temple jewellery under physical custody of two gazetted officers with a double lock system.
2)Maintaining records of transfer and handling of jewellery on a daily basis giving the date, time and name of the handler; conducting a monthly inspection by the Joint Executive Officer of the TTD and making a detailed annual inspection in the presence of a team of designated senior TTD officials.
For a self-appraisal of procedures, the TTD has constituted a six-person committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge D.P. Wadhwa. It will look into the safety and security of temple ornaments, whether their security is full proof, examine maintenance of the inventory register, periodic appraisals of the ornaments by the official gold appraiser and maintenance of stock registers regarding ornaments donated by devotees from around the world. The panel, which has met twice since January, will meet again at the end of September to finalise its findings.
During 2004-08, the TTD had been toying with the idea of using CCTV cameras to track the movement of jewels and the maintenance of registers. After digitisation of the jewellery stock was done, the initiative gathered dust. Worse, the actual value of the jewellery inventory is not known and it is grossly undervalued. Jewellery appraisers hired by the TTD are not skilled and valuations are not based on current market rates. There is a need for a panel of experts to value and index it to gold rates at least once in five years for a realistic appraisal.
The recording and accounting practices are so shoddy that it is impossible to retrieve the total assets of the TTD across the country from a single source. The TTD's current financial advisor and chief accounts officer, from the Indian Revenue Service, is not familiar with best finance, audit and accounting norms and practices. Consequently, attempts at vigil are turned into turf battles. Pointing out that the black marketing in advance reservation tickets flourished because no action was taken on the basis of vigilance reports in 2007 and 2008, a distraught Kumar wrote, "This is because these employees have no fear of God, no fear of punishment and no integrity". He suggested that the investigation be handed over to the Andhra Pradesh Police to bring the offenders to book and streamline the system. But it is glossed over.
An independent probe by the Department of Vigilance and Enforcement headed by V. Dinesh Reddy, director general of police, threw up startling facts. The advance bookings of tickets for ritual and darshan are mired in shady deals between 54 people, including at least three members of the TTD board-M. Anjaiah, Kale Yadaiah and G. Subrahmanayam who demitted office last month-and travel agents and touts. The report points out how the board members' private assistants employ assistants to sell the discretionary quota tickets for sevas and darshan at exorbitant rates in the black market. It also pointed out that some TTD employees working at Tirumala are also part of the black market business. This brings to light how advance booking for the most sought-after and high-end sevas like Vashtram and Abhishekam have been issued till 2100, ninety years from now. For this, some unscrupulous travel agents and conniving employees hacked the TTD website to manipulate the bookings.
Even as they demitted office in August, the controversial board members accused Joint Executive Officer A.V. Dharma Reddy of unscrupulous practices. With one of Dharma's assistants committing suicide and TTD employees demanding his removal, the state Government was forced to send him packing from Tirumala to the state Information Commission in Hyderabad last week.
The three controversial members were accommodated on the board as part of political patronage following the appointment of D.K. Adikesavulu as chairman in thanksgiving for defecting from the TDP to support UPA-1 during the 2008 confidence vote in the Lok Sabha. Dinesh's 158-page report presented on August 13, 2010, to the state Government recommends measures to put an end to the racketeering. These include insisting on identity proof of devotees at the time of booking and crosschecking them when they arrive for the rituals and darshan; cut back on the discretionary quota enjoyed by the TTD Board of Trustees; reviewing the system of trustees appointing private assistants who, in turn, employ others as touts who sell the tickets at a premium. Such a practice should entail severe punishment.
The recommendations are simple ones that even a small entity would enforce as a routine measure. But not for the TTD. It is ironical that at its last meeting, a clueless TTD had asked the Andhra Pradesh Government to order a comprehensive probe into the activities of its own temple administration. This was virtually a failure of the TTD board to play an active and advisory role in the management. The 14 board members are seen as holding high-profile positions, dispensing favours and making money at the cost of the temple. The executive officer has the authority to bring to the state Government's notice if any of the members' decisions are anti-religion or against the interests of the temple.
"Our priority is to serve devotees effectively and ensure a transparent administration."J. Satyanarayana, chairman, Specified Authority
With huge finances at its disposal, the TTD has expanded beyond its own control. It needs to reinvent itself by focusing on core functions like pilgrim-centric services including easy darshan, security, prasadams, accommodation, finances and outsourcing all non-core activities. For this, downsizing is a must; so is strengthening internal mechanisms like audit and minimising discretion, which in the hands of a few, has made the TTD a hub for corruption. Jobs have been grabbed as if they were hereditary rights by those without skills and competence. Some have been appointed to key decision-making posts that they are likely to hold for nearly two decades. A devout TTD insider says, "Only the Lord can clean up this mess."
Stern measures are difficult to introduce as the belligerent employees hold the TTD management to ransom. Many are not qualified, and career related training opportunities are not available. Political interference has to be minimised and politicians should be barred from the TTD board. Instead, representatives from among donors, experts who can advise on improving TTD operations and people known for public service should be included. For this, the TTD will have to be run like a corporate with its management culled from government officials skilled in administration, finance and security. Chief Minister Rosaiah will have to leverage on the latest Specified Authority to push for those reforms. But till that happens, all that hapless devotees can count on is divine intervention.

The Industries Where Jobs Are Growing Most
As the nation's economic recovery repeatedly jerks forward and then stumbles, here's some good news: 11 of 12 major industries are posting more jobs online than a year ago, according to data gathered by Indeed.com. click here for more details "Indeed.com" ,which aggregates online job postings, found that the transportation, hospitality and retail industries posted the largest increases in job listings since last year. Each had at least 40% more job listings in June 2010 than in June 2009, despite the weak improvement in overall employment numbers recently. Here are all 12.
1)Transportation:
Up 73%. The transportation industry's growth is usually closely tied to that of the greater economy, so the fact that it has had an increase in job postings since June 2009 is not amazing. Since April, though, transportation postings have increased by more than 20,000. Total job listings: 97,870.
2)Hospitality:
Up 47%. As the saying goes, people always need to eat. A great many of the hospitality industry's job listings are for jobs in food service. The most posted ones include bartender, cook and restaurant manager. Total job listings: 92,690
3)Retail:
Up 41%. Most of the retail industry's postings are for customer service positions. "It is less expensive to keep the customers you have than to try to go out and win new customers," says Bill Gessert, president of the International Customer Service Association. Total job listings: 346,953.
4)Media and Newspapers:
Up 39%. Media's relatively few job listings mean that any increase in postings has a relatively large effect on the percentage change in postings. Top job postings include graphic designer, art director and editor. Total job listings: 40,046.
5)Information Technology:
Up 30%. IT's surge is especially impressive considering that it is the third-largest industry for job postings. Some of the most listed jobs include graphic designer, software engineer and technical writer. Total job listings: 301,434.
6)Accounting:
Up 14%. The accounting industry's job postings have largely remained stable since last year. Some popular jobs include accountant, business analyst and bookkeeper. Total job listings: 129,616.
7)Construction:
Up 15%. Construction job postings have also stayed relatively constant. The most-clicked job in online postings is construction manager, and the city with the most construction clicks is Houston. Total job listings: 100,887.
8)Education:
Up 19%. Education jobs were most often clicked in New York City, with popular listings including teacher and program manager. Total job listings: 113,561.
9)Financial Services and Banking:
Up 15%. Aside from a dip in postings in late 2009, financial service jobs have climbed steadily if slowly since last June. Total job listings: 221,535.
10)Manufacturing:
Up 25%. Manufacturing job postings have fluctuated, but since January 2010 they have increased steadily. Top jobs include maintenance technician, welder and warehouse supervisor. Total job listings: 97,542.
11)Real Estate:
Down 4%. The only industry to suffer a net loss in job listings since June 2009. Its postings were up earlier this year but have recently declined. Total job listings: 25,031
12)Health Care:
Up 2%. The most-listed industry online, health care would need a big change in numbers to experience a big percentage change. It is widely considered a recession-resistant field, because health care services are always in demand. Total job listings: 670,028.

ipad...THE unFORGOTTEN
Coming from the starting point of the iPad i.e., its structure initially defines its simplicity....,
The build quality is excellent. The aluminium back feels great under the finger and nothing feels cheap. There is an audio jack connector for headphones, and a microphone for apps that need it. The speaker is on the bottom of the device where the "Home" button is.It is heavy enough so that my wrist would get tired after less than 30mn of firmly holding it. $499 is a good amount of money, but making something with this build quality at that price is not easy.
ResoLution(pic clarity):
Apple has made sure that the display is a high-quality one.The display deserves its own section: with a resolution of 1024x768, it has a seemingly low pixel density compared to select high-end smartphones. That said, everything looks sharp and colorful.
BroWsing:
The browsing experience on the iPad is amazing. It is smooth, fast, and fluid. The web browsing experience is very like the one on the iPhone/iPod touch, but a little faster, and with a much more comfortable display. Now, there is no need to zoom much and this feels very much like browsing on a computer but,But is it the best? Well, not really.
they are some significant hiccups:
1) Page loading is still noticeably slower than on a computer
2) There's no flash, and many flash-heavy sites like local restaurants or entertainment sites won't work properly.
ConTacts:
Contacts apps on the device aren't exactly groundbreaking, but they are far more usable and information heavy on the iPad. Both utilize -- at different intervals -- split screen, book-like displays.
BaTTery:
The custom iPad A4 processor consumes very little power, so in most cases, the display will be the largest drain factor on the battery. For personal use, the iPad will stay alive for about 1.5 days, and possibly 2 days if we stop trying all the apps with shiny icons. The battery is not user replaceable, and like most batteries, it might lose its charge capabilities or simply die (after a while). Right now, the cost of replacement is $105.95.
YouTubE:
The entertainment portions of the iPad aren't going to blow anyone away or any tech away. The iPad is the perfect place to view all that rich media.Video really does look absolutely stunning on this screen as the clarity riches with the name itself.
As good as the iPad is, it is not perfect. Here's a short list of things that iPad critics usually complain about:
- No camera
- No USB ports
- No background execution (multi-tasking) for third party applications
- No Adobe Flash (yet) FOR EVERY action THERE IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE reaction, with the same theme as tech raises there may be some disadvantages.with this disadvantages an another tablet may raise which will replace this Ipad soon.As 3g existed from the 2G.concluding that an ipad is an entertainment device that could make one's computing life a little better if you find the right apps.

Coolest gadget
MINOX Digital Spy Cam DSC Silver:
MINOX Digital Spy Cam DSC Silver, which is the next generation of spy cameras that has taken on a digital slant. Coming in a silver metal finish, you get a 1.5″ display to preview shots that you have taken, while storing images on a microSD memory card slot (up to 16GB worth). Capable of shooting 5.1-megapixel photos, this spy camera is also equipped with an external flash module when the situation calls for it. Not only that, it also lets you capture images of important and sensitive documents from as near as 19.5″, and as you can see above, it is small enough without calling attention to it whenever you call it into action.Posted by sultana at Sunday, May 09, 2010 0 comments
